Education and Menstruation Without Taboos: Regula’s Impact in Africa

Regula arrived in Tanzania with a mission: to break the taboo surrounding menstruation and provide girls with a safe, comfortable, and long-lasting solution. In many communities, talking about periods is still a forbidden topic, leaving many girls without information or access to proper products. Thanks to the incredible Tanzaniando team, especially Marla, we were able not only to donate period underwear but also to open a much-needed conversation about menstruation.

Before the donation, we held a talk about the menstrual cycle, explaining in a simple way how the body works and why it’s something they should never feel ashamed of. We organized activities to break the ice, such as asking them to raise their hands if they had already had their first period while keeping their eyes closed. At first, only one girl dared to do it. But little by little, their confidence grew, and more hands began to rise. At that moment, we understood how important it was to be there.

Afterward, we explained how to use period underwear, a perfect option for them since it is reusable. And when the time came to hand them out, the excitement on their faces said it all. They didn’t just receive a garment—they received freedom and confidence. Because every girl deserves to experience her cycle with dignity, without fear, and with all the information she needs.
